Terri-Brown-2013 Jack Philipps Award Recipient

The Jack Philipps Gold Medal is the highest honor in the AAF Fourth District. It is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to advertising and furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence, and public service. The recipient of the award this year is Terri Brown of St. Thomas, USVI.

Terri started the firm MLB Creative in St. Thomas and built it into a premium advertising agency in the Caribbean. They now have locations in both the US Virgin Islands and Orlando. MLB boasts an impressive roster of clients including Choice Wireless USA, AT&T, The Ritz Carlton St. Thomas and Caribbean Mc Donald's.

Through MLB, Terri has won numerous creative awards at the local and district level, including Best of Show multiple times. She has earned the lifetime service award from the AAF USVI and was presented the AAF USVI Silver Medal.

Terri has been instrumental in the exponential growth in the quality of advertising. In 1997 Terri recognized that agencies throughout the Caribbean needed a platform to showcase their creative strength, she founded the Caribbean Advertising Federation.

Under her guidance Caribbean agencies and advertising professionals have benefited from the exposure brought by the ADDY Awards competition. Many CAF entrants have gone on to win National ADDY Awards.

This year the CAF ADDY competition grew to the status of the largest competition in the AAF Fourth District. The 52% growth also earned recognition from AAF national as the sixth highest increase in the country.

Serving the District for a number of years as Caribbean Liason, this year she also assisted Governor Lucas with coordinating the return to VI for the annual District Leadership retreat.

Her public service work includes The American Cancer Society, Virgin Islands Children with Disabilities, Literacy Campaigns and United Way and  a AAF USVI economic initiative called "Marketing in a Post Hovensa Economy"

Terri has upheld the highest advertising standards, assisted numerous public service causes, expanded the footprint of the Fourth District and been an advocate for AAF. She is a most deserving recipient of the Jack Phillips Award.

It's just two weeks until the AAF Fourth District annual conference in Jacksonville.

On Friday, April 19 the district National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) will be held at the Omni hotel in downtown Jacksonville. Seven schools from across the District will compete for first place and to move on to the national competition.  NSAC is truly the best college-level advertising competition in the world. If you want to watch the next generation in our industry bring new and innovative ideas to the Glidden Paint company, come watch that Friday. Viewing is free to everyone. The schools presenting this year are Northwood University, University of South Florida, Florida State University, Ringling College of Art and Design, Miami International, Unversity of Miami and the University of Tampa. Many thanks and congratulations to all the student members that have participated t his year.

Of course the NSAC competition is just the beginning of our annual conference weekend. We have professional development presentations, Presidents' Council,  workshops and the District ADDY Awards Gala held this year at Everbank Stadium. The  gala starts at 6pm on Saturday, April 20th. Hurry and get registered for the full conference or just the ADDY gala at http://aafjacksonville.org/2013-annual-conference/.  Downtown Jacksonville will be filled with many exciting things to do outside our conference as well. During your breaks you can visit the over 500 creator and innovator booths for One Spark (beonespark.com). There is no other "social" place to be April 19 - 21 than in Jacksonviille where creativity will shine.

AdDay2013Finally a hearty thanks to our many delegates that participated in Advertising Day on March 19 in Tallahassee. Members from all over the state met with state senators and representatives to remind them that we are an industry that fuels Florida's economy. As we watch other states battle the advertising service tax this year, we can stand proud that we have yet another year of no ad tax on the horizon.  If you missed our legislative fly-in in Tallahassee this year, you still have another chance to advocate for advertising on April 17 in Washington D.C.  Members from the Fourth District will be joining other AAF members from across the country to represent our industry at the Capital. We have meetings set up with Senators Rubio and Nelson as well as some Florida House members. I invite you to join us and advocate for advertising. For more details and to register for this event log to www.aaf.org

I know there are many choices in spending your valuable time and resources, I personally thank everyone for choosing AAF. - Marla Lucas, Governor

ADDYs are being judged, students are working hard on the Glidden NSAC case study and local federations continue to produce monthly educational programs. Why are you a member of the AAF? It’s this time of year when we see a spike in membership.  Membership really does have its rewards here in the Fourth District.  A big reason for many is the 50% reduction in ADDY entry fees. That’s a huge savings in itself but there are so many more benefits to membership.

We are already a month in to the new year, and ADDYs are in full swing around the country. It's a busy time of year for all of us at work, home and in AdFed. There are a lot of great things happening across our district, so much of which would not be possible without the volunteers who serve as District Four committee chairs.

Another holiday season is upon us, and have you noticed that demand in the advertising industry has increased? Locally and across the district, I see new creative being produced for television and radio, magazines are getting thicker, and of course digital advertising is soaring and social media continues to bring new revenue to the industry. Do you see it too? I'm happy to report that many of our local federations are also experiencing growth and a renewed enthusiasm for advertising.

This past weekend District Four met for the 2012 Fall Conference in Panama City where we listened to local presidents report on increased membership, better attended programs, successful media auctions and more. I would like to thank AAF - Panama City President, Ron Sharpe, his board of directors and sponsors for hosting an impeccable conference with rousing speakers from Southwest Airlines and  Infinite Scale Design Group.   We came, we learned, and we left inspired. I encourage every member in our district to get involved on their local AAF board. The industry knowledge you gain, the relationships you foster, and the time you are giving back to your industry and community is priceless.

As we bring in the holidays we also bring in the ADDY season. ADDY call for entries materials and postcards are in the hands of most federations by now.  To reieive yours, contact your local Federation President or ADDY chair.  Federations are already busy planning galas and  the winners will be awarded before you know it. I predict increases in entries, membership and satisfied winners as we prepare for the District ADDY show on April 20 in Jacksonville, FL.

Here's to a happy holiday and increased success in 2013. The next time we meet, we will be in Tallahassee where we celebrate Advertising Day by speaking to our legislators and reminding them that advertising fuels the economy. Please put on your calendars Advertising Day on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 and keep reading our monthly Go Fourth newsletters for more details.

Thank you for being a member of the AAF Fourth District. Go Fourth!
